Gandy Dancers

I have been doing research on my great-grandfather, Henry Lewis Demps, Jr., whose job in the early 1920s was to move railroad tracks back into place. These African Americans were sometimes known as "gandy dancers" for the tools they used and perhaps the movement with which they pushed the tracks back in place to the rhythm of the calls.
